Best Buy should compete with manufacturer's to allow for student and Federal / State Government discounts on laptops, desktops and certain accessories. I know Apple allows it's Government employees a pretty good discount on products (with proper ID) and same goes for student discounts with Sony. It would be a HUGE benefit to have something like this implemented.
While this would be a nice idea I would like to point out as a state of GA employee my own self we don't get just discounts anywhere. The state has to discuss the terms with that company. At the moment we only have contracts with like Dell/HP/Verizon. I would love to get an extra discount from BestBuy!
No! It's not needed. If someone is eligible for a discount from Dell, HP, or whomever, they can and should get it directly from those manufacturers. As far as custom ordering goes, the same applies. If you want a specific configuration, you order from the manufacturer. It costs a bit less to order memory and storage upgrades directly from the manufacturer when ordering a laptop or desktop than it does to get the same or similar upgrades through Best Buy's Geek Squad, which won't have warranty coverage from the manufacturer.
I also noticed regarding this topic that Best Buy only accepts .EDU email address for students, my mom works at a special needs school and has a .ORG email address. I believe Best Buy should expand it's education discounts to their faculty as well. Most teachers work just as hard and deserve their discount as well!
Do you know of a discount that is missing Fill out the form below to suggest a new discount for federal employees/retirees to include on this page. Please note that discounts submitted must have a corresponding webpage with information about the discount in order to be verified and included in our listing.

Thomas R. Bloom, Director of DFAS, was impressed with the results of the reverse private auction, and communicated his belief that Buyers.Gov could be a powerful savings tool in future procurements. \"The Buyers.gov auction was tremendously successful and is a great vehicle to add to the competitive process. I think it has a great future in government procurement, \" Mr. Bloom said.
Buyers.Gov provides federal agencies with multiple options for making purchases, such as Private Auctions, volume purchases through aggregations (eFAST), and Quick Quotes, using reverse auctions, credit cards and dynamic competition. Buyers.gov's e-procurement solution is intended to leverage the best of the private sector's electronic procurement solutions for the benefit of government organizations.
\"The auction concept, combined with Internet technologies, has significant potential for bringing buying communities together to leverage their buying power,\" said FTS Commissioner Sandra Bates. \"Buyers.gov could be considered a dot -com initiative in government, because of its business model and practices.\"
\"We have launched a new era in leveraging the government's buying power,\" said Bob Suda, FTS Assistant Commissioner for Information Technology Solutions. \"We have found a way to streamline the procurement cycle while maintaining a truly competitive environment, thereby providing the best value for both the government and the taxpayer. This is an IT solution that the procurement, financial, and CIO communities should find easy to embrace in this era of procurement reform, budget constraints, and evolving technologies.\"
